Los Angeles, CA (May 18, 2016) – “Dream Big, Start Small” is the theme of this year’s National Small Business Week (starting May 1-7) which many businesses and retailers promote for the whole month of May.  On May 2, 2016 Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office of Economic Development hosted the Mayor’s 3rd Annual Small Business Recognition Ceremony. This event was in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, The City of Los Angeles Economic Workforce Development Department, and was generously supported by MUFG Union Bank.

The special ceremony focused on highlighting the significant size and diversity of the small business community in Los Angeles and the government funded centers that support entrepreneurs in the Los Angeles region.  There were twenty-six small businesses recognized at the event: nine were nominated through BusinessSource Centers, sixteen through SBA-funded centers and one through their event partner – the USC Marshall School of Business Family Business Program.

As an example, a small business recognized by Mayor Garcetti, Groundswell Group, was through one of the SBA funded centers, SCORE Greater Los Angeles (SCORE LA).  As a resource partner of the local SBA office, SCORE LA is part of a national chapter network with headquarters in Washington D.C.  SCORE LA provides entrepreneurs and small business with ongoing free mentoring, information and low-cost workshops that can be vital to a small business’s success.

Groundswell Group, a unique company that connects brands with customers through the causes they support, used SCORE LA’s help to be a standout. “The day I found SCORE was the day my business idea took a turn for the better”, said Noel Wax, president/partner of Groundswell Group. “I attended nearly a dozen workshops and met with multiple mentors. The more things I attended the more I wanted. All this information and knowledge helped me really focus on my idea and what I needed to do to get to market. I was lucky enough to meet Barbara Schwartz who led a few workshops I had attended. She became my mentor. She was a powerful and influential guide to help me navigate the early days of setting up my business. I am so thankful to have found SCORE and tapped into the valuable resources available. Any chance I get I recommend to fellow entrepreneurs to take advantage of what SCORE has to offer,” Wax reflected.
