SCORE of Greater Los Angeles (SCORE LA) helps startups and small businesses flourish. Two of the organization’s many success stories, Cocobella Creamery and Glazed Donut Bar, have advanced their operations through SCORE LA’s mentoring and the companies’ creative flair.
Cocobella Creamery in West Hollywood was founded on the belief that if you have cut dairy or gluten out of your diet, its ice cream is for you.
"We start with a perfect base made of coconut milk, cane sugar and vanilla, then we build onto layers of high-quality ingredients for the most decadent and unique frozen treats. … Our goal is to bring more joy and play to our customers one scoop at a time," say owners Alice Cherng and Belinda Wei.
“We were pretty clueless about opening an ice cream shop. Luckily, we met Phil Benderman (SCORE LA mentor), who has always encouraged and validated our plans and efforts. We definitely attribute a major part of our success of opening our store to Phil,” they said.
Another delicious success is the Glazed Donut Bar in Whittier. Co-owner Anthony Davis describes his business this way: “Ready for the next best thing in donuts? Glazed Donut Bar is the new made-to-order donut shop, with an array of glazes and toppings from which to choose that will soon become your new favorite way to enjoy an old treat. If you like strawberry and peanut butter cups on your donut, we've got you covered! Like banana and sprinkles? We’ve got it here!”
Davis got his idea in summer 2015 and started meeting with SCORE LA mentor Tom Liesy in early 2016. He developed a business plan with SCORE’s help, then formalized his concept and acquired a business partner by November 2016. As he formed the business in January 2017, he started doing special events such as farmers markets, birthdays and weddings. Now, with his store, he’s accomplished his sweet dream.
About SCORE and SCORE LA
Since 1964, SCORE has been the premier small-business mentoring service in the U.S. The nonprofit resource partner of the Small Business Administration has about 320 chapters and more than 11,000 business expert mentors who give free help so that small businesses and entrepreneurs can successfully start and grow their businesses.
The SCORE LA chapter helps small businesses get established and grow by providing free business resource information, free expert mentoring and low-cost educational workshops. SCORE LA has been offering these services for many years and in 2016 enhanced its aid to the sprawling Los Angeles area by adopting a “subchapter” setup that better matches programs to the population(s) of five regions of L.A.
